Parenting comes with a whole lot of challenges and responsibilities and I think we can all agree it can seem overwhelming at some times. As a Christian parent, I often wonder how the ‘world out there’ does it without God.
In my parenting journey, I feel like I am constantly reminded of how important it is to be plugged into God as the VINE. I am sure every parent reading this agrees that we’ve all had our parenting moments of “oh no what now? Or how do I deal with this?” From the get go parenting goes through different seasons and it seems as soon as you’ve ‘mastered’ the challenges that come with one season, the next season appears with its unique challenges and detours.
Parents have never had busier lives. I often catch myself wondering whatever did I do with all my time before I had kids. As a parent the list of responsibilities seems endless, working a 9-5, shopping, school pickups, cleaning, sports events, school activities and going to church (and the list goes on and on!). So if we’re barely surviving our busy schedules, how are we supposed to share faith and train up our children on matters of faith? For some it’s an easy answer – the church does it. So you’ve joined an incredible church and the kid’s church is run by amazing volunteers who have a real heart for Jesus and kids. Don’t take me wrong here – I am by no means saying kid’s ministry isn’t amazing and has such a crucial role to play in building up the next generation but building faith up in our kids can’t solely be the responsibility of churches and youth ministries. Sure the volunteers and youth workers at your church are passionate about sharing Jesus and want to build faith in the next generation but I can guarantee you that your influence as a parent will be 100 times more effective and long-lasting.
Here’s a compliment to YOU as a parent… God hand- selected YOU to be the perfect parent to YOUR children. No one else has the unique gifts, personality traits, strengths and abilities to build up faith and guide your children as you do. This is by far the most important job you have ever had to do and even though this might seem like a big responsibility, you can be reassured that God is in this journey with you. We can do ALL things through Christ who gives us strength (Philippians 4:13), God gives us new mercies daily (Lamentations 3:23) and God will not give you more than you can handle (Isaiah 41:10).
Sharing faith with your kids doesn’t have to be an intimidating task or challenge. It can start with 5 min of reading the bible together in the morning at the breakfast or dinner table or praying together before bedtime. Play simple games like a scavenger hunt finding things around the house that represent different days of creation. For older kids and teens, ask them questions of faith to hear what they think on topics like ‘heaven’ or ‘identity’ and make time to read the Bible together. John 15 says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me”.
In John 6:35 Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
As parents, we need to take hold of every opportunity to share and build faith within our children. Take some time to pray about this and ask God to show you where you can make time or how you can practically build faith in your children. At Faith4Families our heart is to equip and empower parents to build faith in their children at HOME. We have some great resources specially made for parents with busy lives and schedules. Faith Box sessions take 30min a week and I can guarantee your 5-12-year-olds will LOVE it!
